It's an interesting system, and because guns and pikes are so powerful, I find myself using a more balance army instead of just steamrolling with heavy cavalry. After a couple days, you return to the town and talk to the commander to have the troops join you. For example, if the town has a barracks, stables, infantry commander, mercenary commander, and cavalry commander, you could start training 5 militia pikemen, 5 musketeers, 3 mercenary pikemen, and 5 light cavalrymen. You pay a fee to the commanders to train 3 to 5 of a certain unit type at a time. Instead of upgrading peasants into proper troops, you have to visit a friendly fortress or town that has facilities for recruitment (barracks, stables etc, along with commanders for different troop types). You can hire as many villagers as you want. At the start of the game you have to rely on mercenary troops from taverns, as well as customizable mercenaries from camps on the world map.

They also only upgrade into militia pikemen or musketeers, and all other troops can only upgrade once, into a "veteran" that has better stats and sometimes slightly better equipment. At the start, you can get peasants from villages, but you can only hire them until you have around 20 men in your party. The biggest thing that I see people complaining about is how recruitment and training works. There are also no productive enterprises, you make your money early game by creating caravans, and later on its villages that give you your income.
You can still find some from fighting strong enemies, but it's much less likely than Warband. Another thing you'll notice is that good armor is hard to find. I recommend playing on 1/4 damage, even if you always play Warband at full damage. For starters, guns are everywhere, and they're pretty powerful.
